How Does A Clutch Work?
We supply and fit clutches to suit all makes and models or cars and vans. The clutches we use are OEM quality e.g. LUK and Valeo brands. Dealer supplied clutches can also be supplied and fitted too.
All manual transmission cars have a clutch fitted. Some vehicles with an automatic, semi-automatic or tip-tronic transmission also have clutches.
The clutch controls drive between the engine and your car’s wheels. This is done through friction plates in the clutch. As your engine, once turned on, is constantly rotating the clutch allows your car to operate without the wheels turning. For your car’s engine to operate without its wheels turning, the clutch controls friction between the engine and the transmission.
The clutch contains a large friction disc. When the clutch is not operated then the friction disc is in contact with the engines fly wheel and provides drive to the transmission. When the clutch pedal is pressed down the friction plate is pulled away from the flywheel which allows the car’s engine to keep rotating without providing power to the transmission and onwards to the wheels.
The clutch plays such an important role in your car’s operation and it is important to use it properly. Using your clutch gently can extend its use by as much as 50%, while use it in a reckless manner can cut its effective use in half.
How To Extend The Life Of Your Clutch
- Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving.
- When you come to a halt at traffic lights or in queueing traffic, do not leave the car in gear with your foot on the clutch.
- Do not slip the clutch to avoid gear changing
- Make sure there is a little free play in the clutch pedal movement before you feel the clutch begin to operate.
- If you have a hydraulic clutch control, make sure the reservoir is topped up.
